Objective To investigate the effect of serum homocysteine (Hcy) on cognitive function in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods Eighty patients with ischemic stroke admitted to the department of internal medicine of Chuxiong Hospital from January 2014 to January 2015 were divided into observation group (> 16μmol / L) and control group (≤16μmol / L), each 40 cases. The MMSE score and HAMD score of both groups were analyzed. The correlation between serum Hcy level and HAMD and MMSE scores was analyzed. Results The score of MMSE in the observation group was higher than that of the control group (u = 2.721, P = 0.006). The HAMD score was also higher than that of the control group (u = 2.321, P = 0.002). Serum Hcy levels were positively correlated with MMSE and HAMD scores (r = 0.514,0.523, P <0.05). Conclusions High serum Hcy levels lead to cognitive dysfunction in patients. And the higher the serum Hcy level, the more severe the cognitive dysfunction in stroke patients.
