The purpose of this review is to provide a clear relationship between growth factors and diseases of the back of the eye. Growth factors are capable of binding to specific cell surface receptors, acting individually or synergistically as multifunctional signals to regulate cell growth and proliferation. Their biological effects on cells include cell adhesion, migration, survival, differentiation, extracellular matrix secretion, release of proteases and protease inhibitors, generation of other growth activities, and angiogenesis. Growth factors link cells to the microenvironment. Because some growth factors are the soluble mediators of injury repair and angiogenesis, both proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) may be caused and aggravated by these factors. Other factors may be used as survival factors. Prevents retinal degeneration. The versatility of the growth factor makes it possible to put it into practical use in the future.
