Although the application of fracture mechanics has been successful in the fracture analysis of many commonly used structural materials, its application to fiber-reinforced composites has so far not been effective. This article will examine its basic causes, briefly review the meso-mechanics phenomena involved in the fracture of composites, and review the various analytical methods published in the literature. It has been found that these methods are generally empirically extrapolated from linear elastic fracture mechanics and are unable to cope with the complexities of crack propagation observed with meso-mechanics. The conclusion is that revolutionary mechanics of fracture mechanics are needed: an idea is proposed.
