The initial planning of the Lesotho Plateau diversion project will lead 2.2 billion m3 of water from Lesotho to South Africa, but it was not until 1986 that the two countries signed a cooperation agreement. The first phase of the project was started in 1998 and the subsequent sections are under planning. Economic indicators show that the project has brought obvious and comprehensive benefits to South Africa’s economy and labor market.
