Baltimore, United States: An expert at Johns Hopkins University said using small, specially illuminated mirrors to diagnose and treat chronic sinusitis and acute mild sinus infections may bring important reforms in dealing with these diseases. Traditional therapies for patients with sinus diseases that have failed antibiotic therapy since the beginning of the century have been the extensive removal of mucosal tissue from the sinuses, which requires hospitalization, general anesthesia and postoperative nasal packing. Johns Hopkins Head and Neck Surgery, Ear & Nose David Kennedy, an associate professor of laryngology, introduced the European endoscopic sinus surgery. So far, he has treated 25 patients with sinus diseases, a technique that provides safer, more accurate and less painful treatment to thousands of patients. Austrian surgeon Wilhelm Messerklinger pioneered the technique of inserting a scope of 3 to 4 mm in diameter into the sinus cavity through the nose. Kennedv said: “We’re looking at the speculum outside the opening of the palate, looking at the swollen area and looking for subtle signs of inflammation or infection.” He put a special surgical instrument in place with a slightly modified endoscope to remove only diseased tissue and Open obstructive sinus. This procedure requires no external incision and minimal damage to normal structures. It can be done under local anesthesia or as a surgical procedure to avoid hospitalization.
