文学创作既是对社会生活的审美反映,又是作家对生活出路的思考与探索。然而美国作家肖恩·威斯图的获奖短篇小说集《堕落的爱达荷》却似乎并未努力寻找生活的出路,展现给读者的都是黑暗、压抑、困顿的氛围。这个由九部短篇小说构成的故事集,在独特的空间叙事艺术中,描述了爱达荷州一群失去宗教信仰之后面临困惑与绝望心境的人,他们徘徊在上帝与现实之间,纠结于犯罪与忏悔的选择,绝望地探寻现世与来世的关系。绝望的压抑感,是对当代西方社会生活最深刻的揭示,也正是肖恩小说所要表达的主题。
Literary creation is not only the aesthetic reflection of social life, but also the thinking and exploration of the writer’s way of life. However, the American author Sean Willstu’s award-winning short story collection, “Fallen Idaho,” does not seem to be trying hard to find a way out for life. All this shows to the readers are dark, depressed and sleepy atmosphere. This set of nine short stories, in a unique space narrative art, describes a group of Idaho people who face confusion and hopelessness after losing their religious beliefs, wandering between God and reality, tangled in crime With the choice of repentance, desperately explore the relationship between the world and the afterlife. The sense of desperation and repression is the deepest revelation of contemporary Western social life and it is also the theme to be expressed by Shaun’s novels.
