在日语语法研究中,对动词的自他对应现象的研究历史,甚至可以追溯到日本的江户时代。其中、本居春庭在《词的通路》(1828年)一书中,把动词分为六种形态,进行了系统的考察。这一论著不仅是日语自他动词研究的早期代表作,而且在今天仍具有十分重要的参考价值。近代,在对动词的自他对应形态的研究方面、具有代表性的应首推佐久间鼎。他在《现代日本语的词汇与语法》(1936年)中,主要根据日语动词的语音特点,把动词的自他对应形态概括为:
In the study of Japanese grammar, the research history of the verb since his correspondence phenomenon can even be traced back to Japan’s Edo period.
