蜀葵,古称戎葵,因最早于四川发现,故名蜀葵。葵的历史悠久,《国风·豳风·七月》即有「七月亨(烹)葵及菽」的记载。七月的葵花特指秋葵,也就是黄蜀葵。清人陈淏之《花镜》称其「秋月开花,色淡黄如蜜,心深紫,六瓣侧开,淡雅堪观」。蜀葵的植株修长而挺立,可高两米。明人杨穆《西墅杂记》记载,成化年间,倭人入贡,见栏前蜀葵花不识,遂题诗云:「花如木槿花相似,叶比芙蓉叶一般。五尺栏杆遮不尽,尚留一半与人看。」因花开淡雅,黄蜀葵与道教文化颇有渊源。道家崇尚清淡平和,故诗词典故中往往以葵花、道
