A method has been developed for evaluating vibration mode shapes and frequencies of dams supported on layered foundation. The total dam-founda- tion system is analyzed by component mode synthesis, a special type of “disp- lacement modes” at the interface between dam and foundation is suggested, which improves the “constraint modes” suggested by R. R. Craig, because it allows different discretization of dam and foundation along their interface, besides, it has the advantages of higher precision and saving of computer eff orts. In addition, a program has been devised so as to solve problem of large structure system with relatively small computers. Numerical examples indi cate that the proposed method gives reasonable results.
