For the first time, the technological potential of south Korea has become the subject of a symposium held by the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. An introductory essay by Jon Sigudson and Martin Burren of Lund, Sweden, outlines the scientific and technological achievements, prospects and new problems of south Korea. The rapid development in the 1970s and 1980s has raised the prospect of South Korea's entry into the ranks of the most advanced countries in the world after Japan may have followed Japan. Some indicators show the remarkable scientific and technological achievements made by south Korea. Three South Korea companies already have the capacity to produce 64 Mbits of memory, while only two Siemens and Philip in Europe have the same capacity. However, both Burren and Sigurdsson pointed out that the product base of South Korea is narrow and its dependence on foreign imports is too large.
