Recent advances in power semiconductor and converter technology have led to a surge in various circuit topologies, some of which have conflicting performance requirements. For non-professional application engineers, they are often undecided, and the result may not be the best converter choice. This article provides a comprehensive review of the various AC-AC converter architectures and gives a comparative assessment. This provides clues as to how to choose the best technology for a given application. This review and assessment are carried out at a relatively high level, the design details can be found in the relevant sections of the reference.
