《剧本》1991年第4期,发表田万里、张伟的题为《论京剧走向》的文章,他们站在普通青年观众的角度,认为,当代京剧应朝着内容取材单纯、情节淡化的方向发展。文中指出: 在京剧欣赏中,有这样—些现象是很值得重视的。人们欣赏电影时,大多数爱看新片子,而看京剧时,则喜欢看那些熟悉的剧目。可以说明观众看(听)京剧主要是欣赏表演本身所产生的美的旋律,对剧情本身的重视程度则相对不多了(当然.如果人物刻画得不好,也很难产生美感)。京剧表演能给人以快感,给人以美的感受,也就体现了它的最大艺术
