Hospitals around the world need a lot of blood each year， but the blood donated every year is far from meeting this need. Therefore， human hematopoietic technology came into being. Recently， according to British media reports， British scientists have developed artificial blood ErythroMer， and has been tested in animals， which is expected to be used in the next decade for the treatment of human beings.
Human ErythroMer mimics the structural function of human erythrocytes， carries transport oxygen， and slowly releases oxygen during the blood circulation. In experiments with mice， the researchers replaced hematopoietic rats with large amounts of blood. The results show that like animals’ own cells， human hematopoietic cells can carry and transport oxygen to the body tissues. Further experiments have also demonstrated that human blood can resurrect shock animals with 40% blood loss.
Hematopoietic erythrocytes are only 2% of the size of human erythrocytes and are stored at room temperature and can be mixed with sterile water. R & D team Dr. Allan Doctor said， "human blood looks like chili powder." He also said that the shelf life of artificial blood stored in the IV plastic bag can be up to one year or more. This study has made human hematopoietic technology entering a new level.
