1916年3月,年仅17岁的彭德怀参加湘军,开始了长达几十年的戎马生涯。彭德怀在湘军的三年多时间里,吃苦耐劳、作战勇敢,深得各级长官的赏识,很快便被提升为排长。 1921年秋,已经是代理连长的彭德怀,结交了黄公略和李灿两位好友,三个人都有深厚的爱国热忱,很快成了无话不说的知己。彭德怀担任代理连长以后,奉命带领四个班的士兵驻守在华容县的注滋口镇。这是一个只有三百多户人口的小镇,但是这里物产丰富,盛产水稻、芦苇以及各种水产品,按理说镇上的居民应该生活富足,但由于各种苛捐杂税名目繁多,地租、高利贷等剥削异常严重,因此,这个镇上的贫富悬殊也相当明显。
