A four-year European project for special melting products companies has demonstrated the commercial potential of large-diameter blanks for injection molding. Dual spray atomization technology improves process availability and material properties, making it comparable to powder metallurgy and traditional remelting products. D2 alloy injection molded products have been commercialized, and several special steels and high performance alloys are being evaluated for aeronautics and other applications. Osprey process injection molding technology is being widely publicized and generally accepted. Spray forming allows the metal to solidify rapidly, allowing for the machining of special and high-alloy steels. The organization of the product and its various properties may be superior to multiple smelting (remelting) processes and are close to powder metallurgy products while also reducing cycle times and costs. Special Smelting Products Company (SMP) is researching and evaluating the possibility of producing large diameter blanks by the injection molding process. This article gives the results of the study and explores its commercial potential.
