Since 1991, Belgian scholars have discovered that progressive kidney damage occurs when taking Chinese herbal medicine containing Gamboprosperm. In recent years, the “Guandanxiegan Pills” triggered the Guan Mu Tong event, which made people talk about “Aristolochic acid”. In 2003, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine issued notices regarding the prohibition of clinical use of Chinese herbal medicines such as Guan Mu Tong and Qing Mu Xiang of the Aristolochia genus, making this type of Chinese medicine currently difficult to trace in clinical practice. Some clinicians proposed to resume the use of this kind of Chinese medicine. As a pharmacist, the author will discuss the rational use of Chinese medicine containing aristolochic acid from the perspective of the toxicity control of aristolochic acid.
