19世纪末具有悠久历史的中国画历经数变,从清末民初开始,逐渐向世俗和大众的方向演化。这时,任伯年的出现可以说是中国画坛的一个奇迹。任伯年以擅长人物、花鸟、山水,又兼诗、书、画、印,上承传统,旁采新知,锐意革新,独具个性,将艺术实践在传统内部实现了语言变革,又将传统文人画向现代形态作了转变。因此,徐悲鸿称其为“仇十洲后中国画家的第一人”。英国的《画家》杂志甚至把他与西方的凡?高相提并论,赞扬他是19世纪中最具有创造性的宗师。
