Acute stress gastritis is a common cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in ICU patients and is often associated with shock and drug use. The pathogenesis may involve many aspects, however, the reduction of gastric mucosal blood flow seems to be its main feature. A composite perfusate developed by the Organ Transplant surgeon at the University of Wisconsin significantly prolonged cold ischemia time for organ harvesting. This glucose-free isotonic solution (UWS) not only provides a high-energy matrix for ischaemic organs, but also minimizes the swelling of cells caused by hypothermia and prevents intracellular acidosis and oxygen.
