威廉·萨姆塞特·毛姆是20世纪英国最著名的作家之一,是一位多产作家,集小说家、剧作家、散文家、文艺评论家于一身。因出生在法国,他深受法国作家莫泊桑的影响,他的作品叙事风格简洁,结构严谨,逻辑清晰,被称为“英国的莫泊桑”。毛姆关注人性,在诙谐幽默的嘲讽中饱含对人性的同情和怜悯。在《旋转木马》里,毛姆将不同女性人物的人性刻画得栩栩如生,他们或善、或恶,或善恶交织,并配以自然环境的衬托,充分体现了人性的复杂性。
William Somerset Maugham is one of the most famous English writers in 20th century, is a prolific writer, novelist, playwright, essayist and literary critic. Born in France, he was greatly influenced by the French writer Maupassant. His narrative style is concise, rigorous and logical, and is called “Maupassant in Britain.” Maugham pays close attention to human nature, full of sympathy and compassion for human nature in witty and ridiculous mockery. In “Carousel,” Maugham portrays the human nature of different female characters vividly. They are kind, evil, or good and evil, and are accompanied by the natural environment to fully reflect the complexity of human nature.
