Ultrasound microscopy is a relatively new instrument that expands its research capabilities in metallic materials, layered composites, ceramics, polymers, and rubber. A widely available industrial device has been developed and named as the ErnstLeitz scan Acoustic Microscope (ELSAM). When used to inspect metals, unlike optical microscopy, it relies on elastic properties to obtain information via sound waves rather than light waves.
