INTRODUCTION In order to study the effects of compressional magnetism in the earth, we took advantage of the good opportunities of underground nuclear tests conducted in a certain area to conduct near-field observations of the total intensity of the geomagnetic field. We deployed 17 observation sites near the test site. Using the G-816 and G-826 proton precession magnetometers, we observed the total geomagnetic field intensity from September to October 1983.
