作为中国近代戏曲史上重要的戏曲家,姚鹓雏的戏曲创作主要集中于两个方面:一是重要历史人物故事的书写,寄予了明确的政治意识和人生感慨;一是当时人物事件的记述,表现出对于政治事变与国家局势的关切忧患。在以描述历史人物与故事、记述当时人物和事件的创作经历中,姚鹓雏的戏曲作品表现出强烈的述史纪事与寄托情志相结合的特征,从而使之获得了多样的思想阐析向度和深广的艺术创造空间,也获得了相当突出的戏曲史和文学史意义。
