1919年秋天,我进北大预科读书。那时候新文化运动集中在诗的革新问题上。除了小说,一般刊物上总可以看到一些诗作品。关于戏剧方面比较寂寞,虽然否定中国传统旧剧和介绍西洋戏剧的思想已经传播开了,激烈的斗争在蔡林辩论的前后已经交锋过了,在写作和演出的实践上并不很活跃。一些受了新思潮鼓舞的青年,精神文化生活上迫切要求得到新鲜的戏剧。我们有渴望阅读一切新书刊的习惯,当时书刊多半是综合性的杂志,剧本就很少见。易卜生的介绍到现在还在我很深刻的记忆里。
In the autumn of 1919, I went to Beijing University for a matriculation study. At that time, the new cultural movement focused on the issue of poem reform. In addition to novels, you can always see some poems in general publications. As for the relatively lonely drama, although the idea of denying traditional Chinese drama and introducing Western drama has spread, the fierce struggle has been confronted before and after Cai Lin’s debate, and the practice of writing and performance is not very active. Some young people inspired by the new ideas urgently need fresh drama in spiritual and cultural life. We had the habit of reading all the new books and magazines. At that time, most of the books and magazines were comprehensive magazines, and the scripts were very rare. Ibsen’s introduction is still in my very deep memory.
