Leprosy is caused by the leprosy, an obligate intracellular bacterium. Although the first identified bacterial human pathogen, leprosy is limited in its basic biochemistry, immunology, diagnosis and treatment as it remains one of the few human pathogens that can not be cultured in vitro. A leprosy bacterium recombinant DNA expression library has been developed that provides a source of genes for which protein coding may be relevant for such studies. The coding genes for the five most immunogenic proteins of Leprosy have been isolated using monoclonal antibodies to leprosy specific antigens. Interestingly, the specific epitopes of leprosy found with all 13 tested monoclonal antibodies have been generated using recombinant phage from E. coli.
