国际通信卫星组织已决定在国际通信卫星-Ⅴ系列的第五颗、第六颗和第七颗卫星上采用镍氢蓄电池取代目前使用的镍镉蓄电池。镍氢蓄电池的优点是可以节省重量、提高效率、不易变质。通信卫星实验室根据同国际通信卫星组织签订的合同发展了镍氧蓄电池技术,并在美国海军的导航技术试验卫星NTS-2卫星上成功地进行了试验。自1977年NTS-2卫星发射以来,这第一个镍氢蓄电池电源系统工作正常。国际通信卫星-Ⅴ主承包商福特公司将在国际通信卫星组织的许可下用Eagle-
International Telecommunications Satellite Organization has decided to replace the currently used nickel-cadmium batteries with nickel-metal hydride batteries on the fifth, sixth and seventh satellites of International Telecommunications Satellite-V. Nickel-metal hydride battery has the advantage of saving weight, increasing efficiency, and not deteriorating. Communication Satellite Laboratory developed nickel-oxygen battery technology under a contract with Intelsat and successfully tested on the Navy’s NTS-2 satellite. Since the NTS-2 satellite was launched in 1977, the first nickel-metal hydride battery power system is working properly.
