As a participatory medium, social media is an important platform for information gathering and opinion expression of today’s Chinese news practitioners. In this paper, contemporary Chinese professional journalists as the research object, using their microblogging as a starting point to examine their social media practice and professional role cognition. The study found that the most important occupational role for Chinese journalists is still a neutral disseminator of information, but the importance of the participatory “oversight and influence” has improved. At the same time, the use of social media in China’s micro-blogging field can not fundamentally change the role of professional journalists. Their media practice and role recognition are more influenced by the macro factors of the organization.
