在公共场所进行放射性监测,是公共安全防护的一个重要组成部分,表面上看是为了防止放射性物质进入公共场所,尤其是一些重要的场所如机场、海关、大型聚会点等,以保障场所内群众的安全。但它实际上更多的目的是在公共场所检测放射源,预防核恐怖袭击、控制放射性物质走私,以及防止非法携带核物质,这是任何一个国家在国土安全方面必须重视的事情。
