INTRODUCTION Stratiform rock salt consists of vertically extending crystals of salt crystals, which show inclusions of brine in vertical flakes that are arranged in an upwardly “spire” pattern. Göstersman (1963) described this type of crystals of the Saskatchewan Devonian Prairie evaporites from Germany by Zeiss Stein and Woderow and Sveltener (1966). These authors interpret this structure of crystals as the result of upward competition for crystal growth from the sea floor. More recently, Sherman (1970) described the bottom structure of the dry salt marsh in California’s Bage Sea coast.
