The seeds of Avena fatua L. that had just been taken from Alberta were all asleep. 46% of dormancy was released after 33 weeks of storage at room temperature. Gibberellic acid is very effective in breaking dormancy of freshly harvested or stored seeds. Some chemical drugs, namely, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, cytokinin (benzyladenine, kinetin) and thiourea have different degrees of effect on the germination and emergence of stimulated seeds. Seed germination and emergence rates were highest at 10-21 ° C, although germination and emergence rates were lower at 10 ° C than at higher temperatures. Temperatures up to 32 ° C are harmful to normal germination and emergence. The seedlings were most unearthed when the soil moisture remained at 50% or 75% of the field capacity. Seedlings were not excavated when field moisture was high and all seeds were decayed within 11 days of planting. Sowing depth of 2-8 cm best for seedlings unearthed. In the case of deeper sowing depths, the emergence rate of large seeds is faster and the rate of emergence is higher than that of small seeds and medium seeds (divided by grain weight).
