Raymond Carver, the most admired contemporary short storyteller and poet in the United States, has enjoyed a reputation for growth, especially in the last 20 years. Few American writers are much more respected. Many young American writers today abandon the satirical and humorous writing practices prevailing in the 1960s and 1970s and pursue a serious realist style, presumably influenced directly by Carver. His acceptance as a member by the American Academic Association and the Literary and Art Committee is an official affirmation of his talent. The writer, who just married the poet Tesa Gallagher in June 1988, finished his collection of poems “The Way to the Falls”
