Preface Since April 1993, Japan Airlines has been carrying a medical box on a international flight called the “Physician’s Medicine Box.” The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability and limitations of the flight medical kit. Methods Retrospective survey of details of medical emergencies occurring on Japan Airlines international flights. These cases were reported from time to time in the cabin service from April 1993 to March 1996. Results During the three-year observation period, there were 405 medical emergencies reported, with medical emergencies occurring at 3.6 per 1,000 flights or 1.4 per 100,000 passengers. Common problems are gastrointestinal symptoms, trauma, disturbance of consciousness, heart conditions and respiratory complaints. Of the 405 cases, 117 required medical treatment using a “physician’s medicine cabinet.” Most of them are gastrointestinal symptoms, disturbance of consciousness and heart-related conditions. The most commonly used are intravenous fluids, antispasmodics and sedatives. These diseases
