貂蝉作为文学艺术形象在民间流传,大致始自元代话本杂剧以及小说家罗贯中《三国演义》。及后,不知何人又把貂蝉与西施、王昭君、杨玉环并列为古代四大美女。后面三位有案可稽,貂蝉却产地不详。史书中无貂蝉其人,惟有貂蝉名物。貂蝉者,古代朝冠也,乃即职官头顶上戴的帽子,曰“貂蝉冠”。《宋史·舆服志四》:“朝服一曰进贤冠,二曰貂蝉冠,……貂蝉冠一名笼巾,织藤漆之,形正方,如平巾帻。饰以银,前有银花,上缀玳瑁蝉,左右为三小蝉,衔玉鼻,左插貂尾。”貂蝉冠因其佩蝉形饰物、插貂尾而得名。
