近几年来,随着鲁玉1号、鲁玉2号和烟单14号等紧凑型玉米良种的推广,烟台市玉米高产栽培研究有了新的进展,高产攻关试验和栽培指标化的深入研究,使全市的玉米产量有了新的发展和突破。1980～1981年,在小面积高产地上,曾三次出现过亩产在1,800斤以上的高产纪录;1983年全市417.6万亩玉米,平均亩产811斤,千斤地块达65.7万亩,遍及各县;1984年玉米单产与1983年相平,又获得了丰收。
