随着我国农业生产形势的好转,在以甘薯为主粮的地区“红薯半年粮”的情况发生了根本的变化。甘薯在主粮中的比重明显下降而改为辅助粮食或工业原燃;从自给性生产转向商品性生产。选用早熟品种早期提供的商品薯远远超过同期收获的晚熟品种,而能获取较高的产值;农业结构的调整也要求缩短每熟作物的生长期,提高复种指数,增加经济收益;在灾害年份和存在粮食危机的某些第三世界国家种植早熟品种可以在较短时期生产较多的干物质,尽快解决粮食饲料供应紧张问题。因此近年来我国和亚太地区、热带非洲各主要甘薯生产国都把选育早熟品种作为重要的甘薯育种目标。
