The epidemiological study on diabetes in Nauru, a South Pacific island, by renowned Australia diabetes physician Paul Zimmet and colleagues will be a report that serious public health professionals, geneticists and human evolution researchers need to take seriously. The prevalence of diabetes among older people in Nauru is more than 60%. This alarming figure is likely to herald a sharp increase in the incidence of diabetes in other developing countries. Nauru’s situation may also indicate that natural selection is transforming the genetic frequency of humans and at the same time providing an example of the paradox of the epidemic of this non-infectious genetic disease.
