佛学最初传入中国主要有两支,与大乘般若之学相对的,常被称作小乘禅数之学。但何谓“禅数”,众说纷纭,未有定论。把“禅数”视作禅法与毗昙的合称,抑或仅用“禅数”指称禅法,直接关系到对早期中国佛教的定位。“禅数”一词是中国佛教创制的概念,道安、慧远、僧等所谓“禅数”,主要指谓禅经。但同时,毗昙也在早期中国佛教中发挥了重要作用。毗昙辨明法数的特点,为道安提供了诠释经典的重要方法;毗昙对实有的主张,为慧远的念佛三昧实践提供了理论支撑。
