2007年1月9日上午,日本防卫省举行一系列仪式,庆祝防卫厅正式升格为防卫省。根据此前日本国会众参两院批准的法案,日本防卫厅升格为防卫省,防卫厅长官升格为防卫相。日本首相安倍晋三任命原防卫厅长官久间章生为防卫大臣。久间章生可谓是日本第一任“国防部长”,因而人们在关注日本防务省升格、自卫队向何处发展的同时,自然也会关注到这位新任防卫大臣。
