相比钢琴、弦乐、声乐等表演专业,中国管乐的整体普及度虽然有了长足的发展,但在专业领域与欧美国家依然有着很大的差距。有人甚至戏言:“(中国交响乐队的)管乐现场‘冒泡’,上帝都会原谅的!”就是在这种大背景下,范磊却凭着自己过人的天分和不懈的勤奋,在单簧管这个“小”专业里赢得了世界同行的认可和尊重。2008年,这位已在美国劳伦斯大学获得终身教授职位的华人音乐家,怀着一颗赤子之心,毅然放弃了在美国优厚的生活条件,回到母校中央音乐学院任教。5年来,除了教学,他不辞劳苦到全国各地讲学,策划举办各种音乐节及比赛,致力于推动中国管乐事业的全面发展。在他看来,要想使中国的单簧管事业与世界真正接轨,就要有一种大事业的眼光和胸怀。

In his view, in order to truly bring China’s clarinet business into line with the world, it is imperative to have a vision and a mind for a big cause.
