英语和汉语中都有大量习语,是人们经过长期的实践提炼出来的智慧结晶,是语言的精华。英语习语通常包括成语、谚语、俚语、俗语、格言及典故等。而汉语习语通常包括成语、谚语、俗语、格言、方言及歇后语等。英汉习语数量繁多,历史悠久,大都源于生活。由于受地理环境、宗教信仰、历史典故和价值观念等方面文化差异的影响,英语中大部分习语都找不到与之对应的汉语习语。反之亦然。所以习语的翻译应根据其特点采用不同的翻译方法,主要有直译、意译、借用、加注、省略、再造等方法。
