For a long time after the war, especially in the 1960s, the national economic growth rate of Japan kept at double digits. By the early 1970s, Japan had quickly plunged from a defeated nation to a capitalist economic power second only to the United States. At the same time, Japan’s per capita gross national product and per capita national income also increased rapidly. In the “national income doubled plan” of the 1960s, per capita national income increased from 395 U.S. dollars in 1960 to 1,592 U.S. dollars in 1970 (At market prices), a complete increase of three times. In the early 1980s, Japan’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded the 10,000 U.S. mark.
