The calendula plant Calendula arvensis is traditionally used in Italy as an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antipyretic agent. Four triterpene saponins have been isolated from the methanol fraction of this plant, and one epicupabery sesquiterpene and four alloaromadendro sesquiterpenes (compounds 2-5) have been separated from the chloroform fraction. Two new alloaromadendrol sesquiterpenoids (compounds 6, 7) isolated from the chloroform fraction were reported and the in vitro antiviral activity of all sesquiterpenes was studied. The isolation process is as follows: The aerial part of the plant is extracted with petroleum ether and chloroform sequentially in a Soxhlet extractor. The chloroform fraction was eluted on a silica gel column with a chloroform-methanol gradient. Fractions 70 to 83 eluted with chloroform-methanol (8:2) were purified using a thin layer of silica gel.
