One day in early April 1939, the Third Detachment Command of the New Fourth Army in Zhongji Village, Reddy Township, Fanchang County (now Chek Shah Township) posted a slogan of “welcomes international friend Smedley to visit”. In her capacity as a reporter for the British “The Guardian of Manchester,” Smedley came to China to fight against the Japanese front and publicize and help the Chinese people’s anti-Japanese cause.
