染色体数的多倍化是很多栽培植物重要经济性状改良的有效途径之一,在现代栽培的农作物及果树、蔬菜、花卉优良品种中,有不少是自然产生或人工诱导获得的多倍体类型。但在莲(Nelumbo nucifera)这个种的各种品种、类型中,无论是野生莲或栽培莲至今都尚未见到有发现自然多倍体类型的报道,也未见到有关莲的人工诱导多倍体的试验报告。据我们对古莲类型(中国古代莲、日本大贺莲)、栽培的子莲类型(红花建莲、白花建莲)及不同重瓣化程度的花莲类型(红千叶──雄蕊部分瓣化;重台莲──雄蕊全部瓣化,雌蕊那分瓣化;千瓣莲──雄蕊、花托、心皮全部瓣化)的观察,其染色体数均为16,全是二倍体。
