靖边县位于陕西省北部偏西,榆林市西南部,是1935年解放的革命老区。全县总面积5088平方公里,共辖13个乡,9个镇,1个国营农场,有209个行政村,总人口27.4万,其中农业人口24.3万。县内交通便利,307国道和210国道穿县城而过,靖边至榆林高速公路已经建成,靖边至(定边县)王圈梁、靖边至黄陵高速公路正在建设中,过境的太(原)中(卫)铁路前期勘测工作正在进行,靖边即将成为连接陕西、宁夏、内蒙等地的交通枢纽。县境内矿产资源富集,主要有天然气、石油、煤炭、高岭土等。天然气控制储量为3200亿立方米,属世界级大气田。境内南部山区蕴藏丰富的石油资源,储量在1亿吨以上,含油层在距地表700-1800米之间。天然气、石油目前都已进入开发利用阶段。此外,境内水资源、土地资源也十分丰富。县境内历史和人文景观丰富。位于县城东北58公里处的统万城,是东晋时匈奴贵族赫连勃勃建立的“大夏国”国都,是中国重要的古代都城遗址,被列入国家、省级文物重点保护单位。境内还有秦、明朝古长城遗址和汉、唐古墓群。
