Since the 1980s, Japan’s foreign trade continued to increase substantially, reaching 55.9 billion U.S. dollars in 1985 and 92.7 billion U.S. dollars in 1986, almost five times the figure of less than 20 billion in 1981. The current recurrent receipts and payments also rose sharply, to 49.1 billion U.S. dollars in 1985, which was 3.6% of the GNP. In 1986 it soared to 86 billion U.S. dollars, or 4.4% of the GNP. The massive trade surpluses in Japan mean the trade deficit in other countries concerned.
