According to the statistics of the United Nations in 1970, there were 291 million people over the age of 60 in the world, an increase of 100 million in 20 years. The life expectancy of the population has been increasing over the past 30 years and it is estimated that by the year 2000 the number of people aged 60 and over will reach 585 million.
