Improving the human-machine interface of the AWACS platform and making it a data fusion capability raises a considerable system integration problem, mainly due to the obsolete computer architecture. AWACS relies on large central computers with associated terminals, which makes it difficult to improve or update with distributed computer hardware. One challenge is that the 1,500-pound electronic device that drives the AWACS display is not programmable. This made it difficult for the Air Force and Miter to provide a way to better display data through software modifications.
