Objective To detect the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumor microvessel count (MVC) in transitional cell carcinoma of bladder (BTCC) so as to explore the relationship between them and their clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of VEGF in 53 cases of primary bladder transitional cell carcinoma and 8 cases of non-cancerous bladder surgery. The tumor microvessels were counted. Results The positive expression rate of VEGF in 53 specimens of bladder transitional cell carcinoma was 54.7%, while it was negative in 8 cases of control group. The positive expression rate of VEGF and MVC in poorly differentiated and invasive carcinoma were significantly higher than those in well differentiated (P <0.05). The MVC of patients with positive VEGF expression was significantly higher than that of patients with negative VEGF expression (P <0.01). Conclusions The expression of VEGF and MVC are correlated with the malignant degree of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Detecting the expression of VEGF and MVC in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder may be a prognostic indicator for predicting the biological behavior of bladder cancer.
