在计算机特别是微型机的应用中,常常会出现机器存贮容量不够的问题。这时,人们往往只是想到扩大现有计算机容量,或是购买更大容量的计算机,让机器去满足系统数据对存贮容量的要求,而没有想到选取最佳的数据存贮方案,提高计算机存贮空间的利用率,使同样的计算机容量可以存放更多的数据,从而使微型机得到更广泛的应用。数据压缩处理就是解决这个问题的有效方法。我们在MC—68000微型机上设计的WD—TLX图书流通管理系统中采用这种方法后,使存贮空间减少三分之二,收到了显著的节约效果。
