Saikosaponins had marked suppressive ef-fect upon allergic inflammation, such as PCAreaction,Arthus reaction, adjuvant arthritis anddelayed hypersensitiveness. It had no obviouseffect on the antibody titre level and the amountof immune complexes in the serum of experi-mental rats in Arthus reaction or on the pha-gocytosis of the reticuloendothelial system ofexperimental mice.Saikosaponins solution did, however, decrease the leucocyte count and theamount of histamine and PGE in the inflamma-tory exudates of the Arthus reaction and blockthe release of histamine.Experimental resultsindicated that the suppressive action of Saikosa-ponins on allergic inflammation was due mainlyto the suppression of the synthesis, release andaction of inflammatory mediators such as his-famine,PGE and 5-HT of the inflammatoryprocess in the later stage of allergic reaction. No obvious effect on the humoral and cellularimmunity was noted.
